Silverstream managers learn their job prospects

2:26 pm on 22 November 2013

The Silver Fern Farm meat company still doesn't know when or if it will be opening its Silverstream plant near Dunedin for lamb-cutting this season.

But it told 15 management staff at the plant on Friday what's happening with their jobs.

The Silverstream plant employs up to 180 seasonal and management staff. It operates as an overflow lamb cutting facility for Silver Fern's Finegand and Pareora works in South Otago and South Canterbury.

Seasonal meat workers would normally be called in next month to work until May.

But a forecast drop in the lamb kill this season and a lower market demand for further processed lamb means the company has not yet announced a starting date.

But t's going ahead with plans to merge the management of the Silverstream and Finegand plants and the affected staff will learn today how that affects their jobs.

In the meantime, 60 to 70 seasonal meatworkers from Silverstream have taken up the offer of work at Finegand.
