Earliest start ever for peach canning

It's proving to be not just a great season for apples. Fruit and vege processor Wattie's has started canning peaches in January for the first time in its 80-year history.

The company sources its peaches from Hawke's Bay which has had a warm early summer and fruit has matured sooner that usual.

Normally peaches aren't processed until the second week in February and while it's an early start the total peach crop is slightly smaller than in 2013.

The warm Hawke's Bay days have also produced the largest sized apples in years.
