Fonterra wins award for low-salt cheese

Fonterra has won an international award for its reduced-salt cheddar cheese.

The savoury cheese was named best new cheese at the International Dairy Federation Innovation Awards in Austria.

The awards, which attracted more than 170 entries from 29 countries, are designed to reward innovation and excellence in the global dairy industry.

The savoury cheddar has an equivalent shelf life to standard cheddar but does not require freezing.

Fonterra says it was developed after calls from nutritionists and regulators for foods that are lower in sodium.

The dairy cooperative was also a finalist for best school milk initiative for its CalciYum Adopt a Cow campaign, in Australia.
