Vege harvests hampered by weather

Wet winter in Canterbury has delayed pea planting and is hampering the carrot harvest.

Vegetable processor Heinz-Watties says frequent rain has frustrated many growers' attempts to prepare land and drill seed for peas.

South Island manager Mark Daniels says the carrot harvest of 10,000 tonnes would normally have been finished by now, but 30% of the crop is still to be harvested.

However, he says that once the crops do get established, at least there will be plenty of soil moisture to help spring growth.
