Cameron Norrie is the solitary New Zealander left in the singles of the Australian Open Juniors after others found their more experienced opponents a little too hot to handle at Melbourne Park.

Seventeen year-old Aucklander Norrie who is currently 44th on the ITF junior rankings had to fight hard to defeat China's Siyu Liu, ranked at 100 in the world 6-4 7-6 in the first round of singles despite appearing on the big stage of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Norrie faces Australian third seed Nick Kyrgios in the second round.

Paige Hourigan, Emily Fanning and Bridget Liddell were beaten in the girls singles.
