The New Zealand number one Marina Erakovic is out of the ASB tennis Classic in Auckland.
Erakovic has lost in straight sets to the top seed and world number four Elena Dementieva 6-2 6-3.
The New Zealander didn't look comfortable late in the second set, and required two medical breaks for an apparent neck injury.
Dementieva will now play Shaheer Peer in the quarterfinals.
Others to progress so far are Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, last year's runner up Aravane Rezai of France, Russia's Elena Vesnina, Romanian Edina Gallovits and British number one Anne Keothavong.
