Team New Zealand has cruised to victory in the first race of the Americas Cup challenger series finals after Luna Rossa broke its starboard dagger board.
The Italian entry made repairs to the board on the water before the race, but it failed again short of the first mark.
Sailing alone, the black boat lost two crew members overboard when its port bow pitched steeply into the water.
The New Zealand entry was lucky not to capsize and appears to have only sustained minor damage.
The second race was postponed until Tuesday after the wind speed limit was breached.
