New Zealand wins Gold Coast sevens

5:40 am on 14 October 2013

Debutant Ambrose Curtis scored two tries as New Zealand came from behind to win the Gold Coast Sevens with a 40-19 victory over Australia in the final.

Trailing 12-nil, it appeared New Zealand could have been set for a third successive Cup final defeat at the tournament, but they then ran in 6 tries against a tired Australia.

In the semi-finals New Zealand beat England 14-5, while Australia needed a second period of sudden death extra time to beat South Africa 24-19.

New Zealand captain DJ Forbes says to finally win on the Gold Coast is hopefully going to set them up for another big season.

The next stop in the world series is the Dubai Sevens at the end of November.
