Weepu played on despite stroke

Despite suffering a minor stroke, the Blues halfback Piri Weepu played three more Super Rugby games before it was diagnosed.

But the incident isn't related to the sport and Weepu's expected to make a full recovery.

The former All Black complained of migraine-like symptoms for the past few weeks, and the Blues doctor Stephen Kara says they discussed his symptoms with a specialist.

But it was decided it was most likely a migraine, so Weepu joined the team in South Africa, where there were no further symptoms.

Then Weepu told Dr Kara he felt like his speech was slower and he had to think about his words before he spoke to other people, so they had the scan on Monday - after Weepu played in the Blues' win over the Cheetahs at Eden Park on the weekend.

Dr Kara says it's likely to be a heart problem so Weepu underwent a heart scan on Thursday, but he's expected to make a full recovery, though he may have to be put on some long-term heart-thinning medication - which will still allow him to safely play rugby.

Should the heart scan show a defect in the heart, such as a small hole - which Dr Kara says is quite common in such cases - then Weepu will undergo heart surgery to correct that.
