England has reacted emphatically to the Three Lions' knockout win over Colombia in the FIFA World Cup in the early hours of this morning (local times).

Fans and former footballers have been sent into a social media frenzy as England won the match on penalties at the end, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford making a dramatic save to deny Colombia's Carlos Bacca.
English media have finally got some good things to say about their football team at a World Cup.

However, most have managed to neglect to tell the whole story; Colombia has never beaten England in a football match. Ever. Since they first played in May 1970, England had won three times and drawn twice.
But that has not stopped the country's tabloid media getting in behind their team.

Former England forward Wayne Rooney, who now plays for Washington DC in US Major League Soccer, kept his online celebrations brief, focussing on Pickford's save.

Former English players Gary Neville and Lee Dixon were providing analysis of the game for ITV and celebrated by jumping around and hugging each other.

Gary Lineker, who despite his many successes on the field, including being top goal scorer at the 1986 World Cup and never receiving a yellow or red card during his long career, said he never experienced such a feeling.
