The Serbian captain Nemanja Vidic had to appeal for calm over the public address system as his country's fans rioted during the All Whites' 1-0 win, in a football World Cup warm-up match in Klagenfurt in Austria.

Ten thousand Serbia fans, attended the match and trouble erupted in the second half when they threw burning flares, bottles and other missiles on to the pitch.

Several then invaded the pitch and had to be dragged away by security staff before Vidic, stepped in to urge calm as the match officials and New Zealand's players were getting ready to walk off.

New Zealand striker Shane Smeltz scored the only goal of the match, mid-way through the first half.

The All Whites next friendly match is against Slovenia next weekend.
