Central Districts Kruger van Wyk has been given an opportunity to make the Black Caps wicketkeeping position his own after Reece Young failed with the bat in last month's test series with Australia.

Van Wyk was today named in the 12-man squad for New Zealand's one-off cricket test against Zimbabwe starting next week with Young given the axe after scoring just 22 runs in the Black Caps two-all series draw across the Tasman.

Northern District's BJ Watling also joins the squad in place of injured Wellington batsman Jesse Ryder and will battle Van Dyk for the job behind the stumps.

The New Zealand XI to face Zimbabwe in a three-day warm-up match in Gisborne starting on Saturday has also been named with Black Caps captain Ross Taylor, Dan Vettori, Kane Williamson and Chris Martin included.

The Black Caps one-off test against Zimbabwe begins at McLean Park next Thursday.
