Harris gets Reds' nod to take Quade's spot

New Zealander Mike Harris has been confirmed as Quade Cooper's five-eighth replacement for the Queensland Reds' Super Rugby opener against the New South Wales Waratahs at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

Coach Ewen McKenzie was quick to highlight his goalkicking prowess, the 23-year-old has missed just one of 24 attempts at goal in his 13 matches for the Reds.

McKenzie is more than comfortable with what the robust 186cm North Harbour product adds and has urged him to play his own lesser-frilled game, rather than try and emulate Cooper's antics.

Overlooked by New Zealand franchises after playing in the NPC and at the under-20 World Cup, he made his Super Rugby debut off the bench in the Reds' forgettable 30-6 loss to NSW in round two last year.
