Iwi members told not to fear Mount Ruapehu eruption

A tribe within Tongariro National Park is telling its people not to be fearful of seismic activity on neighbouring Mount Ruapehu - but they should be prepared.

There's been a series of earthquakes on the mountain over the past few weeks.

And GNS Science says it looks near inevitable Mount Ruapehu will erupt within the coming months - because a vent is blocked and pressure is building up.

Pou arahi (executive manager) of Ngati Rangi Trust in Ohakune, Che Wilson, says it's important for Koro Ruapehu to release his pressure.

He says in his tribal narrative, it's quite common to express an internal quiet anger or volcanic activity.

Mr Wilson says Koro Ruapehu is who he is - and the threat of an eruption is just part of living at the foot of a volcano.
