The chair of the only Maori employment training provider in Wellington says more Maori providers must open to get results from a Trades Training Scheme for young Maori and Pacifica.
The Government has committed $43 million in the next budget to increase the number of places in trade training schemes, from 600 to about 3000 .
Unemployment has fallen but Maori and Pacific young people are still more likely to be jobless than the general population.
Chair of private training establishment, Te Ata Hou Trust, Tamati Cairns, says he wants to see potential Maori training providers apply for some of that funding.
Mr Cairns says a Maori PTE can engage better with Maori and whanau than other training providers.
Meanwhile Maori Affairs minister has announced another Budget initiative, aimed at getting more Maori in to employment.
An extra 100 cadetship's will be offered to unemployed Maori who are new to the workforce or have low qualifications.
The scheme, which is currently offered to 250 people, provides employers with $10,000 to train and pay a cadet for six months.
Pita Sharples says 87% of those who have taken part in the scheme remained employed after the cadetship ended, and 9% went on to further study.
