Journalism good preparation for Ikaroa-Rawhiti - Taurima

7:42 pm on 21 May 2013

A political journalist joining the race for the Ikaroa-Rawhiti seat says years of reporting has made him well versed in the issues of the electorate.

Shane Taurima has resigned from his role as host of TVNZ's Q + A programme to seek candidacy for the Labour Party, following the death of Parekura Horomia.

The by-election will be held next month, but parties will select a candidate this week.

Mr Taurima says he's attended hundreds of hui, covered historic events, spoken with many leaders and covered five general elections during his 18 years in radio and television.

He says he's well versed in the needs of his people and what the issues are.

Shane Taurima says any future in political journalism has been put to an end now he's shown which party he favours.

Labour will chose its candidate from four hopefuls on Sunday.
