A South Island Maori language total immersion school says children going hungry shows whanau values have changed.

Prime Minister John Key on Tuesday announced extra funding for a programme run by Fonterra and Sanitarium.

KickStart breakfast in schools will be offered to all schools that need it, five days a week.

The principal of Te Wharekura o Arowhenua in Invercargill, Arni Wainui, says the scheme will help all decile schools.

She suspects one reason children are going hungry is because whanau dynamics are different.

Ms Wainui says many whanau are living in cities with no extended whanau who can care for their children while they go to work.
