An expert in Maori internet and telecommunications is calling for more Maori to take up jobs in the technology sector.

Antony Royal is the chairman of Nga Pu Waea, a working group that advises the Government on Maori broadband interests.

He says there are real opportunities in the ICT sector and there are young people around the world who are creating companies from their own bedrooms.

Mr Royal says he's trying to kick start a project to create a Maori technology sector focussed on exports.

He wants to get young people involved in creating technology companies that will on sell their intellectual property around the world.

Mr Royal says he would love to see the Maori technology sector rivalling the fishing, farming and forestry industries.
