MPs asked to look at chief's removal

7:18 pm on 25 June 2013

MPs have been asked to investigate the way Te Wananga o Aotearoa got rid of its chief executive, Bentham Ohia.

He's pressing for an inquiry into the running of Te Mana Whakahaere - the institution's governing council.

Mr Ohia claims the council has used a flawed process in deciding not to renew his contract - which ends this Friday.

His lawyer, Willie Te Aho, claims Te Wananga o Aotearoa failed to hold an election for a new of member of Te Mana Whakahaere - which then voted to drop Mr Ohia.

Mr Aho says a staff member was elected to the governing council, but was stood down.

He says the second highest polling person was put into the academic representative position, which contravened the Education Act, which states another election has to be held.

Te Manu Korihi understands Willie Te Aho is also attempting to negotiate an exit package for Mr Ohia.

Mr Te Aho says his client has no personal issue with the incoming chief executive, Jim Mather - who is joining from Maori Television.

Te Wananga o Aotearoa says it's unable to comment because it's an employment matter.
