Bay of Plenty iwi Ngati Whakaue has signed a deal to insulate more than 250 of its whanau members' homes.

Its Assets Trust has partnered up with Eco Insulation and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, which administers the Warm Up New Zealand, Healthy Homes programme.

The $730,000 project will insulate the floors and ceilings of more than 250 homes, particularly for whanau with low incomes, children, elderly or high health needs.

Project leader Katie Paul says the authority has anectotal evidence that insulating homes has enormous health benefits, such as reducing respiratory illnesses and doctors visits.

She says the project has potential to deliver a lot of gains for whanau.
