Rotorua waka to carry Auckland tourists

A new tourism venture in Auckland will bring Maori voyaging waka to the Waitemata Harbour.

The Waka Quest tours will provide daily sailings, primarily on the double-hull canoe from Rotorua, the Haunui.

It's a joint move between the Titoki Venture Trust and Navigational Tours, run by John Panoho.

He says the venture, to be launched next month, is about more than just sailing.

Mr Panoho says the waka represent the country's whakapapa and tells the story of how Maori got here and who Maori are as people.

He hopes that there will be a range of different waka in the future.
