The future of a Maori Advisory board under the Rotorua District Council is being reviewed, with the idea of giving it mana and a partnership role.

Te Arawa Standing Committee was formed in 1993 and provided recommendations to the council on Maori matters.

The election of committee members is on hold while a review is underway.

Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick says the council has already started talks with iwi members to find out their opinions.

She says any change would be about recognising that the board has a true partnership with the council.

Ms Chadwick says kaumatua she has spoken to like the idea, and she says it's about knowing who the council should talk to about various matters such as geothermal issues.
