New Maori webseries to be more risque

A new Maori web series aims to create more risqué comedy to appeal to a younger audience.

Five new Maori webseries have been selected for a new project with Te Mangai Paho and New Zealand on Air.

The joint funding venture is the first of its kind, with each production receiving $100,000 each.

Writing was underway for one of the productions, Only in Aotearoa, which would feature about 12, two-minute sketches, targeted at rangatahi.

Kura Productions' managing director and producer of Only in Aotearoa, Quinton Hita of Ngapuhi and Ngati Whatua descent, said he hoped to push some limits with the project.

He wasn't giving away much detail.

But, he said Maori were generally quite conservative, and he wanted to create a more risqué comedy which would appeal to a younger audience.

But Mr Hita said it was also important to have a cultural conscience to help guide the acceptable limits and what the series could get away with.

Writing for the series was underway and filming is expected to start in September and finished by the end of the year.
