Waikato-Tainui dispute may go to mediation

3:12 pm on 10 August 2011

A dispute between the Waikato-Tainui parliament and its executive may be referred to an independent mediator.

The chair of the parliament Te Kauhanganui has written to the executive Te Arataura to say the issue of whether Tuku Morgan should remain as chair of the iwi's executive will go to mediation if there is no resolution.

The executive has reaffirmed Mr Morgan as its chair.

Parliament chair Tania Martin says it is in the best interests of Waikato-Tainui that disputes between the members of Te Kauhanganui are not taken to the High Court.

Ms Martin says she is confident Te Arataura will be willing to sit down with representatives of Te Kauhanganui to find a way forward.
