Ngati Koata says care must be taken in fish farm trial

Coastal tribal trust Ngati Koata says it will support a trial of finfish farming as long as marine species are raised in good conditions.

The Government has proposed changes to the Aquaculture Legislation Amendment Bill.

They include giving tribes more flexibility to negotiate claims and allow for a trial of finfish farming in the Hauraki Gulf.

The Government says the area is suitable for raising hapuka or kingfish in sea cages.

The head of the Ngati Koata trust in the South Island, George Elkington, says there are some environmental points to consider.

He hopes farms will ensure waste from fish does not sink to the seafloor and that farms are not near residential areas, as they would attract sharks.
