The chairman of Ngati Kahungunu iwi has put the Minister of Maori Affairs on notice over the Government's intention to sell up to 49% of four state-owned energy companies.
On Monday night on Napier's Pukemokimoki marae, Ngahiwi Tomoana co-chaired the last of 10 consultation hui the Finance Minister has held with Maori.
He summarised the meeting by saying the iwi sang waiata and spoke quietly but strongly about its opposition to the sales.
Mr Tomoana asked Bill English to pass on a message to his colleague Pita Sharples, who was the inaugural chairman of Ngati Kahungunu in 1984.
He says if the Government does not give up its partial asset sales plan, Ngati Kahungunu will ask the Maori party and the Minister of Maori Affairs to walk.
