The Christchurch earthquake and the subsequent loss of the central city forced locals to reflect on what it was they’d really lost – and what opportunities it presented for change.
Many see the value of a blank slate. It’s impetus to try new things, even if they only exist for a couple of hours, and challenge the way things have been. Some say Christchurch is the most exciting place to be in New Zealand right now.
“There’s a lot more collaboration between people; people coming together and being like, ‘Hey, let’s make the most of this. Let’s use this opportunity to do something different,” says Room Four’s Rosalee Jenkin.
“Most of the initiatives happening are community-led,” says Netta Egoz, organiser of local Pecha Kucha events. “Everything that’s coming from the top is too slow, and too disengaged.”
