Kick Out The Jams: Christchurch Never Mind The Punkfest

9:05 am on 30 October 2015

Interviews and live sets from the New Zealand music underground. This week, we head out to Christchurch Never Mind The Punkfest.

Kick Out The Jams takes a different trail this week with a look at the annual 3-day Labour Weekend extravaganza that is Christchurch Never Mind The Punkfest.

Initially conceived in Wellington, Punkfest has been held every year since 1996 (except in ‘98, when the hall booking fell through). This yearly pilgrimage of punks from around the country and abroad has always been about bringing together a wide range of music that adheres to a punk ethos and a willingness to party, rather than any particular style.

After a 14-year run in Wellington, the event was forced to move to Christchurch in 2011 when a certain ‘dad rock’ band made the Newtown venue of the previous seven years unavailable. Christchurch has in turn proved to be an excellent host, with current venues like the Trike Club and Log Recording studios providing venues for three days of loud, raucous fun in close proximity to the city that would be impossible in Auckland and Wellington.

KOTJ spent the long weekend on the ground at CHCHNMTPF 2015 and asked a range of people what punk means to them in 2015.
