Interim president Diouncounda Traore of Mali has been sworn in, marking a return to civilian rule following a military coup there last month.
Mr Traore, the former speaker of parliament, warned that he was ready to use force to reunite the country.
Since the coup, Tuareg rebels and Islamist insurgents have taken control of a large part of the north of the country.
Mr Traore called on the rebels to "return to the fold and to strengthen this nation instead of dividing it," adding that if they do not, "we will not hesitate to wage a total and relentless war."
