Ticket sales for The Hobbit set a box office record of $US84.77 million for December in the United States and Canada.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey also generated sales of $US138.2 million in international markets.

The 3D Hobbit directed by Peter Jackson is the first of three films based on a 1937 novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, which was a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The previous record for receipts in December was set by I Am Legend, which took $US77.2 million in 2007.
