Collapsed wall kills two people in Melbourne

10:38 pm on 28 March 2013

Two people have been killed and one critically injured in the collapse of a brick wall in Swanston Street in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton.

Officials have confirmed one man and one woman, believed to be in their late teens, were killed, while another woman, 19, is fighting for her life.

Police say all three were pedestrians, the ABC reports.

People in the area between Queensberry and Victoria streets reported hearing a noise like "thunder" shortly after 3pm.

Dozens then rushed to the scene to clear debris from where the three people were trapped.

Police, the coroner and WorkSafe Victoria are investigating.

It's reported there were strong winds in Melbourne on Thursday.

The wall, which had been part of an old brewery, fronted a building site.
