Helicopter jailbreaker denied parole

An armed robber who broke out of an Australian jail 14 years ago in a helicopter hijacked by his lover has been denied parole - for now.

John Killick, who is now 71, broke out of Sydney's Silverwater jail in 1999 after his girlfriend, Lucy Dudko, forced the pilot at gunpoint to land on the prison's exercise oval.

The ABC reports they were on the run for 45 days before their capture, and the case made worldwide headlines.

The New South Wales State Parole Authority on Friday ruled Killick should be gradually given prison leave before his full-time release.

Killick has a criminal history dating back to the 1950s. He faces extradition upon release for outstanding matters in Queensland.
