About 50,000 houses in Britain are without electricity on Christmas Day after torrential rain and strong winds. There is flooding in England and Wales.

BBC Weather said winds and rain would ease on Wednesday evening, although heavy rain and gales are expected to pick up again on Thursday night.

The Energy Networks Association said supply was unlikely to be restored until Boxing Day as many areas could not be reached due to the flooding

Some of the worst travel disruption was at Gatwick airport, where there were flight cancellations due to power cuts on Tuesday.

The BBC reports that full service has been restored at Gatwick.

Brittany and Normandy were among the regions worst hit in France, where the ABC reports 240,000 houses were without electricity.
