Bushfire emergency on North Stradbroke Island

7:53 am on 5 January 2014

A bushfire emergency warning was in place early on Sunday on North Stradbroke Island off Brisbane for a fast-moving fire east of Myora, one of several burning on the island.

The Public Safety Preservation Act was invoked at 7.30pm (AEST) on Saturday. AAP reports residents were strongly advised to leave if they were able.

The ABC reports about 20 properties were threatened.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said the fire was moving quickly and was uncontrolled. AAP reports people were warned they would find it increasingly difficult to breathe as the fire approached.

"Multiple fire crews are working to contain the blaze but firefighters will not be able to protect every affected property and residents should not expect a firefighter at their door," the QFES said in a statement.

The emergency was later lifted.
