Germany has won the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time since 1982.

Nineteen-year-old Lena Meyer-Landrut - a complete unknown when she won Germany's qualifiers - beat 24 other contestants in the final in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, with her song "Satellite".

Turkey finished second and Belgium third in the 25-nation event, which was watched by millions of people across Europe.

The BBc reports that it is only the second time in the contest's 55-year history that Germany has won, its only success coming with Nicole's "A Little Peace" in 1982.

The impact of the economic downturn was felt on this year's event, with several countries pulling out because they could not afford to take part.
