North Korea has test-fired two short-range missiles on Thursday off its east coast, South Korea's defence ministry spokesman said.

The spokesperson said the North had fired the surface-to-ship missiles at between 5.20pm and 6pm local time from a base near the port of Wonsan.

Pyongyang had warned shipping to stay out of waters off its east coast.

The United Nations tightened sanctions against North Korea after it launched several missiles and carried out an underground nuclear test in May.

The UN Security Council responded by approving tougher sanctions against North Korea.
