9:54 pm on 13 July 2009

There was high security at the opening day on Monday of the trial of an Australian woman and 27 others accused of involvement in the 2008 attacks on East Timor's top political leaders.

Angelita Pires, a dual citizen of Australian and East Timor, is facing trial over the attacks on President Jose Ramos Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.

The 43-year-old was the lover of rebel leader Alfredo Reinado, who was shot dead in an ambush that left Mr Ramos Horta critically wounded.

The trial before a panel of three judges is expected to last several months.
