Crisis cabinet meeting held in Greece

12:26 pm on 19 September 2011

Prime Minister George Papandreou of Greece has chaired crisis cabinet talks, a day after cancelling a trip to the United States amid growing fears over the debt crisis.

Mr Papandreou was to meet United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon in New York on Sunday and IMF head Christine Lagarde on Tuesday, but cancelled the trip at short notice.

The Greek finance minister has rushed to allay fears the cancelled trip signals imminent default, saying such talk is ridiculous.

The cabinet talks are focussed on new austerity measures to enable Greece to secure the country's next bailout loan.
