Court order made for adoption of baby

A British court has ruled a baby must be adopted because she is at risk of becoming the victim of an "honour killing".

The baby was born as the result of her unmarried Muslim mother's secret affair.

Three senior judges in the Court of Appeal ruled on Wednesday against an application by the child's natural father to have her live with him and his wife.

Her natural mother is in favour of adoption so that her own family will not find out about the birth.

Both the woman and her lover were from abroad and moved to Britain in the past 10 years.

The adopting couple were Muslims who had taken advice from their imam that they could adopt the girl, who is now aged one year.

The judges imposed wide restrictions banning the publication of all names and locations linked to the case because of continuing danger to the mother and child.
