Womad 2018 was treated to a mesmerizing display of musicianship from Anoushka Shankar who continues the legacy and tradition of one of the 20th century’s most influential musicians – her late father, Ravi Shankar.

Anoushka was taught sitar by her father from the age of nine and made her performance debut at the age of thirteen. Her catalogue of solo recordings has merged Indian classical music and tradition, with a number of multi-cultural collaborations that confirm her as a formidable musician in her own right.

Especially for this Womad appearance, Anoushka Shankar played compositions from her most recent album Land of Gold - an album about the global refugee crisis.

She is accompanied by her drummer and percussionist Manu Delargo who co-wrote the album, an upright bassist who doubled on piano and one of Ravi Shankar's students who played the shehnai, a beautiful Indian reed instrument.

Her appearance on the TSB Bowl stage was eagerly anticipated and appreciated by a capacity audience.
