Salina Fisher composed 'Rainphase' for the NZSO National Youth Orchestra when she was just 22 years old. 'Rainphase' went on to win Aotearoa’s most prestigious composition prize – the SOUNZ Contemporary Award in 2016.

Salina was standing in torrential rain in the Wellington Botanic Gardens when inspiration struck. There, she found herself captivated by the varied sounds the water made falling off the leaves of the many different trees and plants.

“'Rainphase' draws on characteristics of water as rain”, Salina says: “its shape and shapelessness, transparency and density, energy and calm, and its capacity for reflection in both a literal and emotional sense.”
