The chorale “Ad nos, ad salutarem undam” on which Liszt based this work is not a real hymn.
It comes from Meyerbeer’s 1849 opera Le Prophète. The villains of the story, three Anabaptists, sing this hymn in an attempt to deceive and lure the population.
Liszt used the tune for several piano pieces and this gargantuan Fantasia.
