One of the world’s top cornet and trumpet virtuosos now lives in New Zealand.

Harmen Vanhoorne is a Belgian instrumentalist – soloist and bandleader. He’s won awards in all of the major international competitions, including in 2011 International Soloist of the Year after winning both the British Open Solo Competition and the Ern Keller Memorial Trophy in Australia.

Harmen is performing this Saturday evening with the Auckland Sinfonietta conducted by Jucheol Wang. The programme includes a work by Fraser Bremner that’s been adapted especially for him: Black Tears, which commemorates the 2010 Pike River mining disaster.

Fraser Bremner's work depicts the sombre reaction of the nation after 29 miners were trapped in the mine and lost their lives after a series of explosions. The piece incorporates a recording made near the mine of raindrops falling into a puddle. There are 29 seconds of raindrops – one second for every miner that perished.
