Heavy rain and flood warning for Fiji

2:57 pm on 13 December 2016

Fiji weather services say heavy rain could cause flooding in low lying and flood prone areas.

The heavy rain has played havoc at markets in the western Fiji town of Nadi.

Those living in these areas are being urged to prepare themselves to move to a safe place.

A low pressure to the north of Fiji is predicted to develop into a tropical depression by tomorrow.

Flood warnings were issued in early October by the Fiji Meteorological Service but were later cancelled.

However, the heavy rain did cause widespread concern throughout the country in which many people are still living in tents following Cyclone Winston in February.

The Category 5 storm damaged or destroyed more than 31,000 houses and affected about 40 percent of the population.
