The United Nations Children's Fund in Vanuatu says it is working with the government to increase the number of midwives and nurses being trained in the country.

A Court of Appeal decision ruling a year ago on a stillbirth at Port Vila Hospital revealed negligent maternity care in Vanuatu.

A UNICEF health specialist, Surenchineg Vanchinkhuu, told Jenny Meyer, a recent joint partners meeting between agencies and the government raised the midwifery shortage and how to address the problem.
