Vale nickel plant in New Caledonia expected to reopen soon

The Vale nickel plant in New Caledonia is expected to reopen soon after being shut down in December amid unrest over its sale.

This follows an arrangement which appears to satisfy all parties and concludes months of acrimony.

A new structure, called Goro Resources, is to be set up which will allow the Brazilian-owned plant to go into New Caledonian ownership.

My colleague Walter Zweifel has been following developments and I asked him if this outcome was expected.

This file photo taken on May 27, 2015 shows Brazilian Vale's nickel processing plant of Goro in southern New Caledonia.
