Pro-independence advocates say the human rights situation in West Papua continues to worsen because of "deliberate ignorance" by its Pacific neighbours and the international community.

A collation of Pacific NGOs organised solidarity flag raising events across the region today to commemorate 60 years since the banned Morning Star flag was raised in West Papua.

The Morning Star flag a symbol of the West Papuan Independence movement. It was first raised on 1 December 1961 prior to the territory coming under administration of the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority.
