Kanaks at a crossroads in their decolonisation journey

From , 6:03 am on 18 December 2021

Indigenous Kanaks in New Caledonia are facing a crossroads on their self-determination journey.

On Sunday 12 December France facilitated a one-sided referendum mostly attended by anti-independence supporters in the territory.

The pro-independence camp boycotted the vote and are refusing to recognise the result which was over 96 percent in favour of independence.

The turnout for the vote was also the lowest out of the three referenda with only a 44 percent voter turnout.

My colleague Walter Zweifel has been following developments in the territory.

Kia ora Walter so we have heard the result and the responses what is the bigger picture here, what happens now?
