The cyclone season in the South Pacific which came to an end on Tuesday this week last day of April finished with less cyclones than what was forecast.

The El Niño weather pattern was supposed to result in a high number of cyclones in the South Pacific, however, there were only seven - two less than the long term average.

Meteorologist Ben Noll with New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research told RNZ Pacific's Caleb Fotheringham this El Niño episode was unusual both on a global and regional scale.
