AT THE MOVIES #825       STORIES AND STORY-TELLERS

Simon Morris looks at a trio of films, all dependent in one way or another on how they’re told – an immigrant tale, a western about a kidnapped child, and a romance between two real-life – and sadly almost forgotten - women scientists.

In Minari, Korean-American director Lee Isaac Chung tells the lightly fictionalized story of his immigrant parents and their early years on an Arkansas farm.  Stars Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead)

Tom Hanks plays a man who reads the news in small towns after the American Civil War.  In News of the World, he makes news himself when he finds an orphaned German girl, brought up by a tribe of Kiowa.

And Ammonite sees a respected, but repressed, woman scientist fall in love with a rich, married woman.  Stars Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, directed by Francis Lee (God’s Own Country).
